Rose’s champion for The Wick is Dario Illari, director of Jealous Gallery and Print Studio London, who said: I first met Nicole Rose quite a few years ago when she came into our gallery to show us her work. Jealous is continually approached by lots of artists and it’s not often that we come across work that ‘takes you there’. Nicole Rose’s work did just that and the more I spent time with these deceivingly pared down abstract works, the more the intention and narrative that sat quietly behind the surface revealed itself. Very simply, these works give themselves to you slowly and stay with you. Nicole’s Rose herself talks about storytelling as part of her practice, and what beautiful stories she tells.”
Rose has long looked to artist such as Rothko and turns to her “expanding library of books of colour” before she begins a new work. “Coupled with that I’m always listening to music and find that takes me to an inner place filled with thoughts and memory, which find their way onto my canvases.” Indeed, her works seems to have a rhythm and a beat, emanating a shimmering light from within. They often transcribe the emotional responses of the artist to places she goes, and they solicit equally strong responses from viewers who “frequently describe feeling a deep connection – a memory of a place, a moment, or a sensation – which opens up space for shared stories, conversations, and reflections”, Rose says.
Rose has exhibited extensively at fairs across the UK and the US, including the Affordable Art Fair and The Other Art Fair in London and LA. In November (21-23rd) she will participate in Manchester Art Fair, and is excited to present her work to new audiences there. She is also busy working on a collaboration with a studio in the US, who will launch four wallpapers of her paintings early in 2026. It is easy to see why Rose’s work appeals to so many, and why it works in diverse contexts, whether its in a private home, hotel or public space. She captures something of the quintessence of being, the beauty and the mystery of it all.
