Viewing Feast, Melody and Adornment at Mall Galleries

Presented by art revivalist and entrepreneur Pooja Singhal, Founder of Pichvai Tradition & Beyond, this exhibition is a unique opportunity to experience the exquisite, intricate ancient art form of Pichvai in more than 500 works from the last hundred years.

Pichvai is a style of devotional textile painting that dates back 400 years and can be traced to the temple town of Nathdwara, Rajasthan. The sacred Indian art form was originally created for temple rituals, displayed as backdrops behind the idol of Shrinathji, an incarnation of the Hindu deity Lord Krishna. Since then, Pichvai has continued to evolve and be recontextualised through artisans and artists. Feast, Melody and Adornment showcases a stunning range of Pichvai masterpieces from the last century, right up to contemporary approaches to the traditional style of painting.

The exhibition is presented by Pooja Singhal, founder of Pichvai Tradition & Beyond, devoted to preserving and revitalising this fascinating art form. Singhal set up an atelier in Udaipur in 2015, where she works with master artists to restore and preserve Pichvai techniques and knowledge ensuring it will continue for many more centuries to come. This is a rare and unmissable chance to see so many Pichvai paintings in the UK.
