Viewing Woo Jin Joo: Bodily Inbetweenness

Between forms.

Ruup & Form gives London-based artist Woo Jin Joo her first solo gallery exhibition with ‘Bodily Inbetweenness’, a show populated by bodies and creatures that never quite settle into a fixed form. New commissions sit alongside earlier work, ranging from freehand machine embroidery and textiles to ceramics, sculpture and drawing.

Joo describes her practice as ‘myth-making’. Folklore and shamanism provide starting points, which she pulls apart and rebuilds into hybrid figures with their own strange logic. Throughout the gallery, forms seem to emerge or change before your eyes, hovering between the recognisable and completely imagined.

A large-scale textile work draws on lace-making traditions, while ceramic and embroidered panels explore transformation at different scales. Smaller watercolours continue the process, catching creatures part-way through becoming something else. The works are spread throughout the space so that the exhibition itself begins to resemble a habitat.

The pleasure is in being unable to quite name what you are looking at. Don’t miss it.
