Viewing Crown to Couture: The Fashion Show of Centuries

Get ready to experience a one-of-a-kind exhibition at Kensington Palace, where the worlds of royalty and red carpet fashion collide. Crown to Couture is the largest exhibition ever staged at the Palace, showcasing over 200 objects across the State Apartments and exhibition spaces. Historic costume from the 18th century is displayed alongside contemporary couture worn by celebrities such as Lady Gaga and Lizzo, providing a fascinating comparison between the fashion of the Georgian Court and the modern red carpet.

The King’s Gallery, once the central space “to see and be seen” in the Palace, will be filled with stunning dresses from both eras. Lizzo’s Thom Browne dress from the 2022 Met Gala will be on display, featuring a black corset gown and gold cape jacket with intricate detailing. Also included is Lady Gaga’s luminous green gown worn to the 2020 MTV Awards, designed by Christopher John Rogers with a vast skirt reminiscent of the 18th century. The exhibition is curated by Claudia Acott Williams of Historic Royal Palaces, who is thrilled to celebrate the diversity and creativity of red carpet fashion while paying homage to the stunning design of the Georgian age.

Highlights from Historic Royal Palace’s own Royal Ceremonial Dress Collection, including the Rockingham Mantua and the world-famous Silver Tissue Gown, will be showcased alongside an array of accessories such as fans, dress swords, hats, jewellery, shoes, stockings, and even a wig curler! Visitors will learn about the preparation and styling required for attendance at important public events and the subtle messages clothing can convey. With production design by Emmy award-winning Joseph Bennett, Crown to Couture promises to be an unforgettable experience.
