Always searching for the ultimate swimsuit ahead of her travels, Alexandra Miro decided to create her own, launching her eponymous swimwear label in 2017. Ever since, she has been designing pieces that empower and embolden the wearer. Confident silhouettes and bold prints that celebrate women, their bodies, personalities and life choices.

Growing up in London with her art collector parents, she found her love of structure, form and colour in the works of female artists including Japanese sculptor Yayoi Kusama and English painter Chantal Joffe.

Art continues to inform her resortwear, which she launched in 2018 in response to the success of her swimwear. Head to a beach this month and it won’t take you long to find a fellow fan of her work soaking up the sun in the Whitney swimsuit.

THE WICK:   What is on the agenda for a typical Monday?

Alexandra Miro:   Every Monday I have a sense of optimism and purpose for the week ahead. Over the weekend I’ve been able to think and reflect about the past week and how I can implement positive changes going forward. As I travel a lot, it’s difficult to have a specific agenda, each Monday can look very different depending on where we are in the season. Sometimes I’ll be working on collections, whereas other times I’ll be focusing more on the day-to-day running of the business.

TW:   You come from an impressive art lineage and studied history at University College London. What prompted you to start your label?

AM:   It’s true, I don’t come from a traditional design background. I opted instead to study history. However, I do come from a very art-focused background and that helped my creative eye.

TW:   How have you set yourself apart from other luxury swimwear brands?

AM:   Alexandra Miro occupies a unique position within our sector. Our designs are fashion-forward, unique, competitively priced and appeal to women who want to make a bold style statement with their holiday dressing.

TW:   In what ways does your collection enable women to feel empowered and comfortable?

AM:   We want all women to look and feel confident when they wear our designs. We strive to create swimwear that sculpts and shapes the body by utilising fabrics and cuts that work on a variety of different body shapes.

“We want all women to look and feel confident when they wear our designs.”

TW:   Which strong women have helped to influence your designs?

AM:   My mother, Victoria Miro, has always been a great source of inspiration. She is a strong-spirited, independent woman who has a great eye for detail and a strong vision.

TW:   You previously worked in public relations. How has this helped to launch your business?

AM:   I think it’s a great role to develop excellent communication skills.

TW:   What is the most exciting art and fashion collaboration you have seen?

AM:   I’ve always loved the Yayoi Kusama x Louis Vuitton collabs. I think they are immensely creative, and they really showcase the brand and designer in a mutually complementary way.

TW:   If you could host a dinner party with three artists, who would you choose?

AM:   Grayson Perry, for his amazing humour and flair. Marina Abramović, for her sense of theatre and majestic qualities, and Monet, for the sheer beauty of his work.

TW:   As a culturally curious traveller, what one place, artwork and Alexandra Miro garment could you not live without?

AM:   Ibiza will always have a special place in my heart. It has an energy that is unique and invigorating. I wouldn’t go to any holiday destination without the Whitney swimsuit. It is an iconic piece and I always feel so happy and confident when I wear it. I’m lucky to be surrounded by beautiful art but the one piece I really cherish is a Peter Doig painting he gave me for my wedding.

TW:   Where do you find your travel inspiration?

AM:   Sadly, Instagram!

TW:   Tell us about a book that changed your life.

AM:   Wherever You Go, There You Are by Jon Kabat-Zinn. It’s the book that awakened me and lead me to live a more mindful life.

TW:   Who did you aspire to be like growing up?

AM:   Madonna.
