Gallery founder, curator, collector, artist and mum – India Rose James has many strings to her bow. The heiress founded Soho Review (named after a bar her grandfather once owned) in 2015, transforming a former recording studio into a passion project that has since relaunched – in a new premises on Greek Street in 2019 – and become one of most exciting young galleries for contemporary art in London.

Soho Revue has exhibited many rising stars, including Studio Lenca, Antonia Showering, Alma Berrow and Olivia Sterling. There’s no rules for who James presents – except for they’re all artists she’d be happy to hang on the walls of her own home (many of the artists she shows make it into her personal collection, too).

THE WICK:   You are the founder and Director of Soho Revue attributed to unearthing some of the best in contemporary talent. What attributes do you look for in great artists?

India Rose James:   I only really work with artists that I would add to my own collection, as I believe my programme should be very personal to my tastes. I have to love it to want to show it, if I didn’t then the passion would be lost.

TW:   You’ve always lived in London, where is your favourite culturally curious spot?

IRJ:   Soho, obviously!

TW:   An artwork you’d like to add to your collection?

IRJ:   One of Louise Giovanelli’s curtain paintings, I’m lucky to have one of her works but the curtain is the next goal of mine!

TW:   Summer is here, perfect time to read. What is the book you would pass on as a gift to someone else from your suitcase and why?

IRJ:   I’m currently reading ‘Butter’ by Asako Yumuki. I haven’t been able to put it down.

“This is one of the highlights of my job, spending time with the artists in their workspace and discussing the process.”

TW:   What do you enjoy most about London’s contemporary art scene?

IRJ:   How busy it is, it’s so full of young and inspiring people.

TW:   Where do you go to get inspired?

IRJ:   In artists’ studios! This is one of the highlights of my job, spending time with the artists in their workspace and discussing the process. If I had more time on my hands, I’d be a painter myself.

TW:   Any advice for young artists on how to approach galleries?

IRJ:   Most people would say you should email the gallery with your work, I would advise against this. Those emails tend to get lost and won’t actually reach the galleries’ director. The best way is to go to private views and meet the team!

TW:   Frieze and fashion week are nearly upon us. What will be your chosen brands to wear as you launch new exhibitions?

IRJ:   I’m a sucker for MiuMiu but I tend to keep it simple and practical as I’m running from exhibition to exhibition, so it’s more likely to be a Vampire’s Wife dress with some comfy boots – you can’t go wrong!
