Viewing Cecily Brown: Studio Pictures

After working on a large scale for several years with grand commissions displayed at Blenheim Palace and the Capodimonte Museum, British-painter Cecily Brown returns to her roots in a new exhibition of works at Thomas Dane Gallery. As its title suggests, the exhibition comprises smaller canvases (and her smallest work to date) made in and of the studio.

Here Brown easily moves from the loose, gestural brushworks that characterised her larger works into tighter, more focused images that occupy the tight confines of these smaller works without losing the dynamism of her artistic style. The term ‘keyhole views’ – the idea of viewing figures in a natural state, uninhibited by the sense of voyeurism that coined by Edgar Degas – is central to Brown’s pictures as she portrays nude figures in a state of ease and modesty from the comfort of her own studio.

Noting how, ‘you can see things more clearly when they are small,’ Brown uses this opportunity to demonstrate the skill required to paint on a small scale, reminding spectators of other impressive works of a similar format such as Pablo Picasso’s ‘La mort de Casagemas’ from 1901. They may be small, but they are mighty.

Viewing PAD London

Now in its 14th year, PAD London is one of the most eagerly anticipated design fairs. Situated in the heart of London’s historic Berkley Square in Mayfair, PAD London is the top fair solely dedicated to 20th century and contemporary design in the UK.

Taking cue from its sister fair PAD Paris, which was established in 1998, the London edition highlights the very best of modern, contemporary and historical design that the city has to offer. Expect eclectic mixes of authentic design pieces that illustrate changes in interests across time.

This year’s fair features 62 galleries, 21 of which are first-time exhibitors, across 8 disciplines from 23 different countries, remaining faithful to its reputation of exhibiting exciting and original design combinations. Highlights include Dutch design by Scandinavian art and design specialist Maria Wettergren; specially commissioned light fixtures by French artist Bernar Venet for gallerist Philippe Gravier; as well as young design talents from the likes of innovative Chinese designer Jie Wu exhibited by Gallery FUMI and the fantastical functional animal-shaped sculptures by Chilean designer Abel Cárcamo of 88 Gallery.

Viewing Universal Everything – Lifeforms

In their newest immersive exhibition 180 Studios brings together a collection of 14 generative moving image art projects created by the media art and design collective Universal Everything. Known for their innovative displays this exhibition is the largest UK installation by the collective to date since they were established in 2004.

Described as ‘lifeforms’, the characterful artworks were designed using generative software that allows the work to shift, move and interact with spectators in unpredictable ways. As such, no two visits are the same and create unique experience for each visitor to the gallery space. Every artwork occupies its own individual habitat that has been specially designed by Ab Rogers Architects to make interactions personalised and specific.

Drawing from this history of visual culture – from Futurist painters’ attempts to depict the passages of movement in new dynamic ways on the canvas surfaces to Eadweard Muybridges’ famed film and photography experiments in the 19th century – this exhibition transforms the meaning of movement and life in art.
