Viewing Banking on Banksy

The world’s most elusive artist gets a new exhibition at Red Eight Gallery, the first contemporary art gallery in the Square Mile. Located in The Royal Exchange, it champions established and emerging artists, including Boogie Moli, Adel Dauood and Lisa Thomson, and offers secondary market works by such celebrated names as Keith Haring, Harland Miller and Jean-Michel Basquiat.

The gallery’s buzzy debut show, Banking on Banksy, presents some of Banksy’s most popular prints such as Girl with Balloon and Happy Choppers alongside one-off works and signed editions. Among the works up for grabs are Flower Thrower, No Ball Games and Christ with Shopping Bags. Prices start at a hefty £25,000, but happily you can visit for free.

Doing Greenwich + Docklands International Festival

The Greenwich + Docklands International Festival is back for 2022, with a series of exciting free events, theatre, dance and circus happening across the Royal Borough of Greenwich.

This year’s free festival is centred around the theme of ‘Common Ground’ in a bid to remind us of the importance of shared values, rituals and togetherness. ‘As we emerge from the pandemic, with growing economic challenges at home and terrifying events on our doorstep in Europe, I hope that the festival will offer audiences a moment of sanctuary from the anxious times that we’ve been living through,’ says artistic director Bradley Hemmings.

Opening the festival is the UK premiere of SPARK, Daan Roosegaarde’s dazzling large-scale installation inspired by the natural phenomenon of fireflies. Other highlights include Stephanie Lüning’s multi-coloured foam-based artwork that transforms our perception of space and Arjan Kreidhof’s mindful reinvention of a fairground ride. Also worthy of note is Discover Ukraine: Bits Destroyed, which will project images of 56 Ukrainian mosaics onto the facade of the Old Royal Naval College

Thesps should explore the programme of new work and touring productions from Graeae, Tara Theatre, Middle Child Theatre and Talawa Theatre Company, while dance fans should look to performances by the Royal Ballet and Greenwich-based Protein. Dancing City, a two-day dance takeover at Canary Wharf, also comes highly recommended. With family-friendly theatre, dance, installations and games, the Greenwich Fair is the perfect day out for tots and teens.

What better way to kick off the bank holiday weekend?

Doing Hospital Rooms: Like there is hope and I can dream of another world

Here’s your chance to see contemporary art making a difference. Currently installed across Hauser & Wirth’s London gallery is a major exhibition showcasing the work of arts and mental health charity Hospital Rooms. It is part of a new three-year long partnership with the charity to support their vital work in NHS mental health services.

Founded by artist Tim A Shaw and curator Niamh White, Hospital Rooms aims to radically transform the face of mental health care in the UK and beyond by bringing meaningful creative opportunities to those with severe and enduring mental health diagnoses.

‘We have been long-standing supporters of Hospital Rooms,’ says Hauser & Wirth Partner Neil Wenman. ‘Having seen the impact of their work in NHS mental health inpatient units across the country, we firmly believe that art plays an important role in changing lives and providing joy and dignity to stimulate and heal.’

You’ll see new works by Mark Titchner, Harold Offeh and Michelle Williams Gamaker that have been created in collaboration with people with lived experience of mental health services. Also featured is a new recorded composition created by the National Opera Studio in collaboration with students at the Springfield Hospital Recovery College.

Taking place on the final day of the exhibition is a live fundraising auction, featuring works by Julian Opie, Amy Sherald and Giles Deacon, among others. A little out of reach? Stay tuned for the new limited-edition release from Avant Arte x Hauser & Wirth in support of Hospital Rooms.
