Viewing Damien Hirst: Sunshine, presented by HENI

On everyone’s lips this week is the new Damien Hirst show at Claridge’s ArtSpace, the freshly opened permanent art gallery located in the hotel’s Victorian basement. Designed by John Pawson, ArtSpace is now one of the largest art galleries in Mayfair. Landing in the gallery next year are a shop and an on-site café, serving delicious Claridge’s treats.

Works on display include examples of Hirst’s colour chart series and his brilliant pipe cleaner animals. ‘They are about the fact that everyone’s an artist,’ he said. ‘They are a group of works which have never been seen together before — they are big and fun and playful and hopefully they will bring the child out in even the most grown of grown ups!’

Both cryptocurrency and Tenders from The Currency, Hirst’s first NFT collection, will be accepted as payment for the artworks on show. Get yourself down there asap.

Viewing Humble Works, Colnaghi London

Marina mania has struck. Although the long-anticipated Marina Abramović retrospective at the Royal Academy has been postponed (again), September sees the opening of two exciting Marina shows.

The first can be found at London’s Lisson Gallery. Seven Deaths, which takes over Lisson’s Cork Street and Lisson Street spaces, features a new, immersive cinematic experience centred on the talented and tragic figure of singer Maria Callas. Colnaghi, meanwhile, stages Humble Works, a group exhibition of new pieces by Abramović, Nico Vascellari and Fyodor Pavlov-Andreevich that respond to a series of masterworks spanning from Antiquity to the Modern Era.

New installation, photography and video works will be displayed alongside historic paintings or objects of the artists’ choosing, highlighting the creative synergies among artists across different ages. Among the standout exhibits is Diego Velázquez’s full-length portrait of Mother Jerónima de la Fuente from 1620, rarely seen on public view in the UK.

‘It is our privilege to present these artist’s deeply personal artistic responses to their selected masterpieces in this unique site-specific exhibition,’ says Colnaghi senior global director Chloe Stead. ‘I hope that visitors will find the juxtapositions and dialogues between the works thought-provoking, perhaps provocative, but certainly rewarding.’

Viewing Epic Iran, V&A London

Epic Iran is the first UK exhibition in almost a century to explore 5,000 years of Iranian art, design and culture. Featuring ten immersive sections, it brings together over 300 objects ranging from sculpture, ceramics and carpets to textiles, photography and film that celebrate the country’s vibrant culture, history, architectural splendours, myths and poetry.

This landmark survey opens with striking images of Iran’s dramatic and varied landscapes and concludes with works by modern and contemporary artists, including Sirak Melkonian, Monir Farmanfarmaian and Shirin Neshat. In between, you’ll meander through time, empires, faiths, royal rulers and more.

What strikes is the variety and quality of works on display. You’ll encounter everything from a gold model of a chariot from the Persian empire to Parthian and Sasanian sculpture, gold and silverware. The Shahnameh or Book of Kings, arguably the world’s greatest epic poem written at the start of the 11th century by the poet Ferdowsi, is without a doubt among the star exhibits. Elsewhere, spectacular religious pieces — including illuminated manuscripts, prayer rugs and Qur’ans — that chart the place of Islam in Iranian culture are shown alongside architectural drawings from the 19th century, exquisite textiles and watercolours that show Iran’s modernisation.

There is a lot to gallop through here but persevere and you’ll leave feeling enriched and enlivened — and no doubt wanting more.
