Viewing Legends Only: An ode to female icons

Paloma Picasso, Catherine Deneuve and Cate Blanchett are among the famous names to have been captured by the acclaimed fashion illustrator David Downton. By blurring the lines between fashion and fine portraiture, Downton has carried the golden age of fashion illustration into the 21st century, capturing couture looks for the likes of Dior, Chanel and Estee Lauder.

In 2011 Downton was appointed the first Artist-in-Residence at Claridge’s. Now, 16 original works and limited-edition prints depicting female icons are on show in a new exhibition at Gray M.C.A at Claridge’s. Opening to coincide with International Women’s Day, Legends Only features portraits of such celebrated figures as Elizabeth Taylor, Iman and Sophia Loren.

With his economy of line and spontaneous approach to the human form, Downton follows in the footsteps of master fashion illustrators, including Carl Erickson, René Bouët-Willaumez and René Bouché. Dripping with glamour and sophistication, this bijou show is not to be missed. Once you’ve had your fill, swing by the freshly opened Painter’s Room to continue the art viewing experience in style.

Viewing The Perimeter – My Reflection of You: Presented by Alexander Petalas and Russell Tovey

Collector Alexander Petalas and Talk Art host Russell Tovey have teamed up to curate a new group exhibition featuring contemporary works from their private collections. The selected artworks explore the dialogue of common themes that span the two enthusiasts’ personal collection, in turn unpacking the symbiotic nature of collecting in itself. The show offers a rare insight into the tastes and preferences of two passionate collectors, revealing through the exhibited works what speaks to each of them, and looks to inspire a new generation of to begin to amass their own store of artworks they love.

The exhibition opens with its titular work, My Reflection of You, a painting by Ana Benaroya that depicts two figures who appear as almost mirror images of each other, echoing the crossovers and connections between Petalas and Tovey’s collections. Other featured artists include Etel Adnan, Kati Heck, Jonathan Lyndon Chase, Wolfgang Tillmans and many more.

Viewing Jealous Gallery

While somewhat of a verbal mouthful (try saying that title fast), the artwork at Jealous Gallery’s latest exhibition is a visual delight, featuring the drawings, paintings and prints by the eponymous Archer-and-Lebourgeois-and-Michaels-and-Pope-and-Smallhorn-and-Wilson group.

Expression is at the core of the work, with subjects ranging from humorously kitschy posters of Magda Archer to the confident installations of Sophie Smallhorn, colour consultant for the London 2012 Olympics. With comic historical monoprints (Natasha Michaels), collaged illustration (Delphine Lebourgeois), glossy seduction (Sara Pope) and even lightswitches (Jess Wilson) on the table, there’s something for everyone. With so many styles in the mix, the exhibition provides a natural opportunity to understand the complex relationship between artists and their chosen style and media, as they explore colour theory, nature, sexuality, womanhood, power, consumerism, placement and history.
