Viewing Kiefer / Van Gogh at Royal Academy of Arts

Two titans of painting go head to head in this thrilling exhibition across the Royal Academy’s Gabrielle Jungels-Winkler galleries: Vincent Van Gogh and Anselm Kiefer. Van Gogh, the Dutch Post-Impressionist painter whose final works were completed in the year of his death aged 37 in 1890, has been an important, constant influence and referenced for Kiefer, the revered German painter and sculptor known for his monumental works.

That enduring influence comes to the fore in this exhibition that returns Kiefer to the beginning of his career, when aged 18 he received a grant to retrace Van Gogh’s journey from the his birthplace, the village of Zundert, in the Netherlands to Antwerp, Paris and finally Arles. For the next sixty years, Kiefer has continued to be informed by Van Gogh’s techniques, methods and subjects.

Presented side by side are new, never-seen-before works by Kiefer, 80, who pushed the tactile brushwork of Van Gogh to new heights and evocative extremes using thick impasto and raw, expressive materials like glass, straw, lead and dried flora and fauna – one five-metre work included here adds sunflower seeds in a direct homage to Van Gogh. This show was first presented, in a slightly different iteration, in Amsterdam at the Van Gogh Museum and Stedelijk Museum earlier this year.

Acclaimed photographer Nick Waplington, 60, transports viewers to New York in the autumn of 1989 in this new exhibition at Hamiltons Gallery. Waplington met fashion designer Isaac Mizrahi thanks to Richard Avedon, a mutual friend of both – the introduction turned into a productive three-year project, Waplington documenting life at the studio in downtown Manhattan by day and the city’s vibrant house and techno scene at night.

A riveting collection of these photographs is on view at the gallery until September – juxtaposing images from iconic and now defunct clubs, like The Sound Factory and Save the Robots, with images of Christy Turlington, Naomi Campbell and Linda Evangelista, rising stars of fashion, being fitted for Mizhrai’s legendary collections.

This exhibition is a wistful witness to a bygone time, a moment pulsing with freedom and heightened experimentation and creativity that paved the way for many after. Though many of these places no longer exist and the people have moved on, the photographs still dazzle with the galvanising energy of the time. It’s easy to see why Waplington’s images still capture the imagination decades on.

Viewing RA Summer Exhibition 2025

It’s that time of year again! The annual Summer Exhibition 2025 returns to the Royal Academy for its 257th year, with its vast array of an immense 1,700 contemporary artworks by amateur and professional artists alike. This year’s selection was led by architect Farshid Moussavi, RA, and a committee of RA artists: Tom Emerson and Stephanie Macdonald, Vanessa Jackson, Christopher Le Brun, Sikelela Owen, Helen Sear, Caragh Thuring and Richard Wilson. Each artist is responsible for curating a room. All the works are selected from an open submission.

Part of the fun of course is that this is a selling show – and proceeds from sales go to support the future of the RA (who receive no government funding), as well as to the exhibiting artists. Prices start at less than £250, meaning there’s something to suit almost every budget from budding collector to connoisseur.

Highlights this year include a fun-filled large-scale installation by Ryan Gander welcoming visitors as they arrive in the courtyard, with its 3-metre inflatable balls, and new paintings by Tracey Emin. You’ll spot prints, photographs, paintings, sculptures and much more – all united, loosely, under a theme of ‘dialogues’.
