Doing Wilderness Festival

Of all the British music festivals, Wilderness is one of our favourites. Posh? Maybe. But its unique blend of starry music acts, fine-dining pop-ups, craft workshops, wellness classes, arts performances, talks and more, all set in the idyllic Oxfordshire countryside, make it one of the most exciting and diverse cultural events of the summer. The good news? There are still General Camping and Sunday Day tickets available to buy online.

Highlights on the main stage include Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Peggy Gou and headliners Underworld, Jungle and Years & Years. For after-dark hijinks, head to the Valley where you’ll see sets from David Morales, Louise Chen and Storm Mollison, among others. For alternative and independent music, look to the Stargazer Stage and the new Fresh and Flamboyant programme, which offers a mix of cabaret and comedy as well as music by the likes of Queer House Party.

There’s also plenty to get stuck into beyond the music, from pottery workshops and phone photography classes to pilates and aerial yoga. Among the big names taking part in this year’s talks, comedy and debates programme are Deborah Frances-White of Guilty Feminist fame, comedian Russell Kane and journalist Poorna Bell.

When it comes to food and drink, you’re in for a real treat. Will Devlin, Skye Gyngell and Harriet Mansell will all be cooking up a storm as will Adam Handling and dynamic foodie trio Smokin’ Brothers. Elsewhere, you’ll find a diverse range of street food stalls and the Woodfired Canteen which is collaborating with food journalist and author Clare Finney. What more could you want from a weekend out of town?

Doing Bold Tendencies 2022

With June comes the promise of alfresco art and rooftop drinking. So why not combine both at Bold Tendencies, a not-for-profit which supports artists to realise site-specific projects and present live performances from Peckham’s Multi-Storey Car Park.

This year the rooftop will welcome artworks by Martin Creed, Paloma Proudfoot and Dominique White, among others. Look out for Richard Wentworth’s Agora, a reflective design which covers the entire surface of the rooftop car park; and Adel Abdessemed’s Bristow, a 2016 sculpture of a pigeon with explosives strapped to its back. Also on display is Nan Goldin’s Picnic on the Esplanade, Boston from 1973, an homage to the extended family of drag queens that the artist lived with during the 1970s, and those she was close to during the 80s and 90s in Boston and New York.

There’s also a diverse summer programme of events, ranging from classical music concerts to dynamic dance performances. Those with kids should check out the creative workshops, which are available to everyone for free. For a light bite and a tipple or two, make a beeline for Frank’s Café. A summer favourite, it serves classic cocktails, draught beers and wines, as well as a delicious selection of seasonal snacks. See you there.

Doing Women Artists’ Art Week London

If you haven’t yet heard of Women Artists’ Art Week (WAAW), you soon will. The new London-based initiative is on a mission to advance gender equality in the art world by encouraging galleries and institutions to showcase only female artists for one week.

Taking part in the inaugural edition this June are blue-chip galleries such as Saatchi Yates, Gazelli Art House and Alison Jacques, as well as major cultural institutions, including the Serpentine Galleries, Somerset House and Sarabande Foundation.

The latter presents The Demons Show, which brings together the work of eight artists who explore the role of female/non-binary mythical creatures in relation to gender identity within feminist contexts. Other events for your radar include a breakfast talk at Karnik Gallery on 13th June and a curator’s tour of Cromwell Place on 15th June. What’s not to love?
