Doing Toklas

Art meets food in this exciting new culinary opening from the founders of Frieze. Amanda Sharp and Matthew Slotover, the revered art world names who launched the London fairs and the Frieze magazine, have pivoted to a new venture: Toklas, a modern European restaurant housed in 180 The Strand, the central London site owned by Soho House.

The eatery takes its name from Alice Toklas, the life partner of Gertrude Stein and author of a groundbreaking 1954 cookbook that is notorious for including the first modern recipe for cannabis brownies and for kickstarting the 1960’s passion for edibles. Cannabis may not be a star ingredient here, but instead the chefs curate an evolving seasonal menu that focuses on celebrating the natural flavours and aromas of the ingredients. There is also a bakery on site, where those on-the-go can pick up breads, pastries, sandwiches and breakfast bites — alas, no brownies here either.

Casual yet refined, the Frieze duo have applied an artistic eye to the interiors, decorating the brutalist space with forest green leather banquettes and mid-century furnishings surrounded by art school-like prints, posters and original artworks. With the arrival of spring, though, it’s the terrace that’s sure to be the most coveted spot.

Further information
If you’re lucky enough to be in Berlin this weekend, make sure to scope out the first edition of Gallery Weekend *Discoveries, a new series of exhibitions spotlighting fresh artistic talent organised by the Gallery Weekend Berlin network. Gallery Weekend Berlin has long been a highlight of the international arts calendar, and it seems its little sister is primed to follow suit.

Some 50 galleries across the city are taking part in the new initiative, among them Tanja Wagner, Crone and Sprüth Magers, which presents a solo exhibition of ten new works by the Paris-based artist Hanni Alftan. König Galerie, meanwhile, highlights a trio of artists whose reputations are on the rise, including painter Dennis Osadebe and Californian-based artist Heather Day. At Peres Projects, you’ll find Staying with the Trouble, Harm Gerdes’s first solo exhibition with the gallery.

Gallery hop complete, head down to the Neue Nationalgalerie to catch its solo Alexander Calder exhibition, featuring his entrancing mobiles, stabiles and standing mobiles. If you’re a fan of avant-garde art, look to Museum Barberini’s brilliant exhibition exploring Impressionism in Russia. Scoot along to Transit for supper before sipping on classic cocktails at Ora. And then to bed. Or not. Berlin’s famously hedonistic clubs have finally reopened. At least for now, the all-night party has resumed. See you on the dance floor.

Doing The Oyster & Fish House, Lyme Regis, Dorset

The Oyster & Fish House, the latest solo venture of restaurateur Mark Hix, is every bit as seductive as you’d hope. Perched on the hillside with views of The Cobb and Jurassic Coast, this metropolitan hotspot serves up the very best local produce, fish and seafood.

The bright, airy site boasts simple white wooden furniture, floor-to-ceiling windows and a view that makes the long drive from London worth it. Although the restaurant is currently closed, the outdoor deck is open and can now be booked online. (Check the weather in advance as the terrace is not completely covered.)

Start with oysters, rocks or natives, before trying the Cornish red mullet soup. When it comes to mains, we’d recommend the Dublin Bay prawn burger and the Grilled Lyme Bay lobster. But save room for pudding: the Peruvian chocolate mousse is too delicious to miss.

The drinks menu also spotlights British produce. Wines are sourced from local vineyards including Lyme Bay Winery, while beers hail from the South West. Seasonal cocktails showcase local spirits such as Julian Temperley’s Somerset Cider Brandy.

If you can’t nab a table, head to Mark’s fish truck, a converted Chevrolet ambulance, offering local fish and seafood to cook at home. It pitches up outside Felicity’s Farm Shop in Morcombelake each week, but you’ll need to check Facebook for opening times.
