This week, the artist being championed is also an ardent supporter of other artists herself. While many of us were perfecting our banana bread recipes in June 2020, landscape artist Lucy Kent founded Art for Charity Collective to connect the artist community and help small charities whose normal avenue for funding had been closed down during lockdown. It hosts two live Instagram auctions a year featuring works by emerging and established artists.

ACC ambassador Pips Taylor was a fan of Lucy Kent’s work, which is inspired by light and colour and capturing the beauty in the everyday, for many years before she picked up a gavel to also host one of ACC’s live auctions during lockdown.
Taylor says: “I have been following Lucy Kent for a number of years now, and I am especially drawn to her plein-air landscapes and fond of her use of bright vibrant colours, which she uses for her sunsets and sunrises. Lucy captures the light of the sun with such warmth and I really love the way she layers paint, making her pieces feel dramatic and bold, yet also really playful. I feel lucky to own two of her works (and counting!) and I get so much joy from them. They offer me an escape as she captures these perfect moments of nature with intense colour. We all need a ‘Lucy Kent’ on our wall to remind us to take time out and remember how beautiful the world is.

“I also love how Lucy herself champions new artists for good and created Art for Charity Collective. This has become a brilliant way for people to discover and collect new artists while giving back.”

Since September 2020, ACC has raised nearly £200,000 for charities and Kent considers it her biggest achievement to date. She says: “I set up Art for Charity Collective at the start of the first lockdown as a way of harnessing the desire to give back among the artist community. We are now 100 artists globally, both emerging and established, and we raise money for various charities throughout the year.”

The first Art for Charity Collective group exhibition will be held in London this summer. Kent will also be exhibiting her latest paintings from Cornwall and Marrakech in April and June, from home in the house that she built with her husband over six years. She says: “It’s a modern house, wrapped in burnt larch with a pitched roof and glass front, and the main living space is designed to work like a gallery space, with gallery lighting, so I can show my work to people in a relaxed, home environment.

“I’ve just come back from painting in Marrakech. I love working from life, and being outdoors in nature is a big part of that. Being fully immersed in my surroundings, I find it almost meditative and really good for the soul. I love big views, wide horizons, travel and architecture, different cultures and lights.”

Experienced broadcaster Pips Taylor has worked for BBC Two, BBC Three and The X Factor, fronting hard-hitting documentaries and live events. An in-demand DJ, when she’s not behind the decks at events such as Royal Ascot and the Cannes Film Festival, you can listen to her sharing good news stories on BBC Radio 5 live, or to her podcast ‘Eat. Rave. Rest. Repeat’. She is also an advocate for women’s rights and the co-founder of Fem Foundry, a social and educational female network.

“We all need a ‘Lucy Kent’ on our wall to remind us to take time out and remember how beautiful the world is.”

Place of Birth

Bristol, UK.

Education

I trained in classical portraiture at Charles H. Cecil Studios, followed by London Fine Arts. But I felt more of a pull towards the landscape, so taught myself how to paint it in oil.

Awards, Accolades

I’ve exhibited with the Royal Institute of Oil Painters and Bath Society of Artists, Eastwood Fine Art and Fine Art Commissions. I received the Points of Light Award from the Prime Minister for recognition of my charity work with Art for Charity Collective. I’ve held several solo shows, all of which have sold out. My last solo show in September sold out on day two of opening.

Upcoming exhibitions

A solo show at home and the first Art for Charity Collective group exhibition will be at Unit 1 Gallery Workshop, London on 20 June 2022.

Spiritual guides, Mentors

Having lunch with the very kind and generous artist Andrew Gifford was a pivotal moment in my art career. He later took me plein-air painting for the first time, and I pretty much gave up portrait commissions there and then and followed my dream of painting the land. My sister Amy Kent, who is a rug designer, and whose work ethic has always inspired me.

Advice

Create your truth, and what feels right and natural to you, rather than following trends and worrying about what people like. The rest will follow.
