Viewing Folkestone Triennial

Head to the actual seaside and visit the 2025 edition of the Folkestone Triennial, which takes over the coastal town until October. Works by Monster Chetwynd, Laure Provost, Cooking Sections, and Dorothy Cross are among the 18-strong international line-up this time, the Triennial’s sixth edition.

Titled How Lies the Land? the artworks (including sound, digital, and monumental sculpture) are linked by their exploration of the earth – from its deep histories to the futures it holds. Works pop up in surprising spots across Folkestone, including old railway lines, empty buildings, coastal paths and everyday public spaces, often inviting breathtaking new perspectives on the familiar and dynamic contrasts with the everyday.

The inspiration for this edition comes from the name and heritage of Folkestone itself – a place that has been inhabited and transformed through centuries of life, and whose location looking out to sea is a constant reminder of both the connection to the continent and our separation from it as an island. As the organisers put it: How Lies the Land? is “an open invitation to walk, listen, imagine and connect.”
