Sola Olulode
The Wick had the pleasure of collaborating with The Association of Women in The Arts (AWITA) and their latest JW Anderson installation, “You’re my Sweetie, My Sugar” with artist Sola Olulode.
Founder of The Wick, Katy Wickremesinghe recently visited Sola Olulode’s studio and chatted with her and curator Alayo Akinkugbe, founder of @ablackhistoryofart, about their latest exhibition in JW Anderson’s Soho Store. In the interview Sola shares her influences, highlighting tender connections and the everyday representation of queer and black relationships.
British-Nigerian artist Sola Olulode’s practice uses processes and materials that are rooted in her Nigerian heritage and combines them with her subject matter which is inspired by her life in London. Sola’s utopian scenes celebrate relationships that transcend crude notions of queer sexuality, her figures exemplify the warm embrace of queer love, a temporal space to bathe in memories of intimacies abundant with scenes of profoundly deep tender connections.
The Wick is a hub and community on a mission to connect the culturally curious and open up unique art world stories and experiences. For further information please see: www.thewickculture.com
AWITA is a not-for-profit network which aims to advance careers for women in the visual arts. www.awita.london
