Viewing Ghosts of Empire II

Curated by Larry Ossei-Mensah, Ben Brown’s brilliant new exhibition foregrounds artists from African and Asian diasporas exploring the intersections, overlaps, and dissonance between the Black Atlantic and Asia Imperialist Trade routes. It also examines how these artists use their artistic practices as a platform to engage with the legacies of slavery, migration and colonialism, while asking questions about how these communities have shaped the cultural fabric of our global society.

‘There are a multitude of communities that have been oppressed because of colonization and imperialism, who, in spite of that, have been able to thrive and create rich cultures that have had a heavy influence on contemporary society,’ says Ossei-Mensah.

On display are works by such celebrated names as Hurvin Anderson, Zao Wou-Ki and Theaster Gates. Also featured are works by Alvaro Barrington, Livien Yin and Chris Ofili. Shown together, they reveal the diverse and creative ways in which these artists have examined their cultural and social histories. It’s not to be missed.
