Viewing Hannah Starkey: In Real Life

The first major survey exhibition of British photographer Hannah Starkey traces the development of her work across two decades, while highlighting her interest in capturing the everyday female experience in contemporary culture.

‘Throughout my career, I’ve maintained a space to contemplate what photography can do for women,’ Starkey has said. ‘For me, it’s a very exciting time right now with all the conversations about gender and attempts to redefine what it means to be a woman.’

Her meticulously staged compositions show women in moments of private reflection, alienation or social interaction. You’ll see penetrating portraits of girls she encountered growing up in Belfast, mothers with their children and women at recent street protests in London. Also featured is a new body of images created in collaboration with young women at Wakefield’s CAPA performing arts college.

It’s an opportunity to see the remarkable range of Starkey’s practice and her unflinching commitment to the medium of photography. Book your train tickets now.
