Viewing Legacies of Modernism

The art of friendship.

Make your way to Berkley Square to witness ‘Legacies of Modernism: A Selling Exhibition of Works by Günther Förg’ from the Collection of Mikael Andersen, now on display at Phillips Auction House. Highlighting the profound friendship between German painter (Förg) and Danish gallerist (Andersen), the exhibition sees the masterful works from 1993 – 2003 displayed alongside sculptures created by Sonja  Ferlov Mancoba (1911-1984), an artist admired by both. The structure and expression in Ferlov Mancoba’s work resonates with that of her contemporaries, including Alberto Giacometti, Joan Miró, and Jean Arp. Returning to Denmark after World War II, Ferlov Mancoba went on to create semi-abstract beings, guardian figures, and masks from clay and plaster. Not to be missed, witness the generational legacies tied together in the friendship of an artist and gallerist.

Including paintings, works on paper, monotypes, ceramics, sculptures and photographs from Andersen’s collection, the exhibition will present a dialogue between Förg and Ferlov Mancoba, seeking the connections between their work and her influence on Förg. Proceeds raised from the sale will contribute to the development of the Sonja Ferlov Mancoba Museum Pavilion on the island of Bornholm, Denmark.
