Viewing Lynette Yiadom-Boakye: Fly In League With The Night

Haven’t you heard? Lynette Yiadom-Boakye’s major 2020 survey has returned to Tate Britain after closing prematurely due to lockdown. Hurrah!

Born in 1977, the British painter is best known for her enigmatic portraits of fictious black figures painted in a muted palette of blacks, browns and greys with the occasional flash of brightness. Often painted in spontaneous bursts, her figures seem to exist outside of a specific time or place, prompting viewers to project their own narratives, memories and interpretations.

The most extensive survey of the artist’s career to date brings together around 70 works from 2003 to the present day, including three new paintings presented here for the first time. Highlights include First, which was included in her postgraduate exhibition at the Royal Academy Schools in 2003, and her heart-warming portrait of two children playing in Condor And the Mole (2011).
