Viewing Oliver Hemsley: CARE GIVERS

Hop on a train and head to Margate this weekend to see Oliver Hemsley’s first solo exhibition, CARE GIVERS, at Tracey Emin Studios.

An emotional journey of resilience and a raw and uncompromising look at the body, Hemsley presents an exhibition that delves into the personal complexities of a life that is dependent on the care of others. Following an unprovoked attack that left Hemsley paralysed, his work features self-portraits that analyse his body from every angle. Through his practice, he reconnects with his body and the reality of being a gay disabled man, where on a recent episode of Talk Art, he describes his journey as ‘coming out as disabled.’ An inspirational story that tackles the reality of having a full-time carer, the long journey to relearning how to draw and make art and the hope that art has given to Hemsley.

Curated by British artist Tracey Emin and Elissa Cray at TKE Studios, the exhibition coincides with Margate Pride, with a special preview of the show on Friday, 11 August.
