Viewing Paula Rego: Crivelli’s Garden

All hail Dame Paula Rego. To mark thirty years since The National Gallery commissioned Rego’s ‘Crivelli’s Garden,’ the mural will go on display in the Sainsbury Wing Dining Room, united with the 15th-century altarpiece by Carlo Crivelli it was made in response to. A monumental 10-metre-long artwork, the mural is tribute to the strong women that influenced Rego throughout her life. Celebrating not only Rego’s relationship with the National Gallery as the first Associate Artist between 1990-2, the mural also honours the staff at the gallery who influenced it. The work depicts female saints, mythological women, friends of Rego, her family and gallery staff set within a maze-like Portuguese garden.

A memory mural made not only for the gods but also for the people – this is a must-see.
