Viewing Sarah Cunningham: The Crystal Forest

Connecting art and nature, Sarah Cunningham: The Crystal Forest has arrived at Lisson Gallery. In her first solo exhibition with the gallery, Cunningham presents a new body of work exploring psychological spaces through landscapes that, with layers, adapts and takes on a new character. Taking inspiration from JG Ballard’s science-fiction novel, The Crystal World, the show presents Cunningham’s own crystalline scenes through late and small-scale works that each hold their own narrative of collaged fragments. Taking the viewer beyond the surface and into new worlds and forest landscapes.

Expressing herself through mark marking, Cunningham’s paintings take on a new life. Adding elements of nature, such as tree branches to the end of her paintbrushes, each brush stroke combines the sway of a branch in the wind with her gestural movements. Stretching her whole body across the canvas, the sun incarnates the work. Often working through the darkness of the night, the dawn feels richer as the sun rises, bringing a sensual feeling to the work of a cold night to the warmth from the dappling rays of the sun as it starts to rise. Immerse yourself in the kaleidoscopic forests of Sarah Cunningham this weekend and head to Lisson Gallery.
