Viewing Yoshida: Three Generations of Japanese Printmaking at Dulwich Picture Gallery

Three generations of the inimitable Yoshida family are explored through 75 works in this landmark exhibition at Dulwich Picture Gallery – the first of its kind to trace the evolution of Japanese woodblock print artists through two centuries, an incredible story of an unparalleled dynasty.

The exhibition begins with the work of the masterful patriarch, Yoshida Hiroshi, who worked prolifically until his death in 1950. A pioneer of the shin hanga movement, his landscapes were known and celebrated in the US and Europe as much as at home in Japan. New research also draws a specific connection to London – Hiroshi even visited Dulwich Picture Gallery in 1900.

The exquisite watercolours of Hiroshi’s wife, Yoshida Fujio, and their sons, Tōshi and Hodaka, both of whom brought post-war abstraction to the Japanese printmaking process, also feature, alongside Hodaka’s wife, Yoshida Chizuko, a co-founder of the first group of female printmakers in Japan – the Women’s Print Association. The exhibition concludes in the present, with the work of their daughter, granddaughter of Hiroshi and Fujio, Yoshida Ayomi: a site-specific installation of a cherry blossom.
