Time on the Thames.
British artist
George Henry Longly’s CHRONOS has been unveiled on
Fresh Wharf’s riverside façade, close to the site of a former Roman wharf.
Curated by ETNA London and commissioned by Pegasi Management Company, the work takes its title from the ancient idea of time. Longly draws on geology, archaeology, mythology and architecture, translating these references into a multi-component work made from stone, marble, brass and polished stainless steel. Across the façade, sweeping geometric forms bring the old river city into contact with the sheen of the reworked building.
The installation has material presence, but the making deserves attention too.
Southside Waterjet fabricated the stone elements, using precision cutting and hand finishing to translate Longly’s design into architectural scale. Longly, whose work has been shown at Palais de Tokyo, ICA London and Serpentine Galleries, has spoken about chance encounters, and
CHRONOS is well placed for many.
