Domestic disturbance.

In the wilds of Gloucestershire, Home Improvements places art in the path of everyday movement. Organised by British contemporary artist Rachel Howard and Doris Press, the exhibition unfolds on Painswick Footpath 164, bringing together works by Abigail Lane, Clare Woods, Des Hughes, Fiona Banner aka The Vanity Press, Kel Portman, Lily Cheetham, Lola Allan, Howard herself and Sarah Lucas.

Across sculpture, painting and textiles, the exhibition looks at home as something more restless than settled: a place of shelter, memory, tension and repair. Installed among trees and beside the brook, the works sit within the shape of the dell, appearing to visitors who set out to see them as well as to walkers who find them by chance.

Home Improvements suggests the domestic urge to mend and make better, but here that impulse is sent out into the landscape. Placed outdoors to negotiate branches, weather and the open air, these encounters take place away from the protection of gallery walls, asking what home might mean when it is no longer contained indoors.
