American architect and designer Dara Huang is the founder of Design Haus Liberty, a globally successful consultancy in a wide range of design services from architecture and interior design, to product design and branding working across the residential, commercial, hospitality, and retail sectors. Design Haus Liberty have become tastemakers and game-changers in the industry, known for their bespoke designs that are both innovative and prioritise sustainability.

Huang is also the co-founder of Vivahouse, which converts disused commercial properties into co-living spaces. Most recently, she is the founder of Dara Maison – a luxury furniture line.

We caught up with her as she hopped on a Eurostar back to London, where she’s based, from a client meeting in Paris.

THE WICK:   How does your typical Monday start?

Dara Huang:   I never know until I start. I usually read my diary the night before to see when my first meeting is to make sure I set my alarm. Even though I read it, I forget and then I have to read it again in the morning and I just have to be ready. Today I woke up at 5 am to come to Paris to meet three people including a boutique hotel we are designing in the heart of Paris.

TW:   We are in a month in which the capital celebrates design. What are the must go-tos in your diary?

DH:   I am often in hosting mode, so I am really excited to be able to go and visit some great art and design this month with PAD, Frieze Week and Aadnevik. Art always gives me inspiration for new designs. I feel really blessed to be in a capital that celebrates art, design, fashion, history, culture and also food! It always makes it interesting for anyone coming through to see the best the world has to offer.

TW:   You are a qualified architect and a Harvard alum. How did your journey cross into the field of design?

DH:   Well, an architect is a designer of buildings so the two go hand in hand. I guess if you’re asking how I got into architecture I started drawing homes when I was nine – I remember always being fascinated by the way different spaces made me feel and how design could profoundly influence our human experience.

TW:   You recently created a new product line called Dara Maison. How do you want to shake up the traditional design market?

DH:   I want things that are incredible designs but functional, super luxurious but affordable, exceptional materials but stain proof. Is that so much to ask?!

Dara Maison is an extension of our design philosophy. The collection is inspired by our passion for timeless beauty and functionality. Each piece is meticulously crafted, with an emphasis on quality and versatility.

TW:   Sustainability is key in your designs. Are there any materials or sustainable practices you’re excited to explore in future projects?

DH:   Just more designs!

TW:   Creativity, architecture, and design are so intrinsically linked. How do you see art fitting into your work?

DH:   I think those three things are art. If you mean the art that hangs on the wall – I am OK with anything. I am truly passionate about the arts and if I wasn’t an architect, I would still want to be close the world of creativity. If I wasn’t an architect, I imagine I would be an artist and paint.

TW:   You are Taiwanese-American. How do you see your mixed heritage coming together in your work?

DH:   I don’t really; I consider myself global so bringing in all cultures not just two.

TW:   In 2013 you founded Design Haus Liberty, an award winning architecture and interior design firm. You are also a regular television presenter and founder of Dara Maison. As a mother, how do you make it all work?

DH:   I’m not sure. I would say a good team. Great people that surround and support me. A big shout out to my PA who I couldn’t live without.

TW:   What mantra or philosophy guides you when shaping environments that leave a lasting impact?

DH:   Doing something beautiful.

TW:   Who is your ultimate Monday Muse and why?

DH:   Rosey Chan. Because she has raw talent and that’s super hard to find these days. We are lucky to be born with gifts we can make a business out of that feeds us and the people we love.
