Viewing Bourdon Street Chippy at Lyndsey Ingram

No seaside trip would be complete without fish and chips. Lucy Sparrow is back at Lyndsey Ingram with her latest spellbinding reinterpretation of a British favourite in felt. This time, Sparrow – with the help of her team – has transformed the galleries on Bourdon Street with 65,000 handmade felt pieces perfectly recreating a traditional chippy.

Expect to be awestruck by Sparrow’s staggering attention to detail – there are tables laid with plates of felted fish and chips, mustard, mayo and ketchup bottles, and a fridge stocked with all the classic cans of Coke, Sprite and Fanta. There’s even felted hygiene and allergy signs, posters and artworks on the walls.

Following on from the success of her corner shop, sex shop and more recently her pharmacy (at Lyndsey Ingram in 2021) Sparrow is a genius at evoking nostalgia and connecting people to familiar places where everyone can feel comfortable and at ease. A feel-good installation is sure to be a summer hit.

Viewing Folkestone Triennial

Head to the actual seaside and visit the 2025 edition of the Folkestone Triennial, which takes over the coastal town until October. Works by Monster Chetwynd, Laure Provost, Cooking Sections, and Dorothy Cross are among the 18-strong international line-up this time, the Triennial’s sixth edition.

Titled How Lies the Land? the artworks (including sound, digital, and monumental sculpture) are linked by their exploration of the earth – from its deep histories to the futures it holds. Works pop up in surprising spots across Folkestone, including old railway lines, empty buildings, coastal paths and everyday public spaces, often inviting breathtaking new perspectives on the familiar and dynamic contrasts with the everyday.

The inspiration for this edition comes from the name and heritage of Folkestone itself – a place that has been inhabited and transformed through centuries of life, and whose location looking out to sea is a constant reminder of both the connection to the continent and our separation from it as an island. As the organisers put it: How Lies the Land? is “an open invitation to walk, listen, imagine and connect.”

Viewing Richard Mosse: Broken Spectre(s) at Art Vault, Sante Fe

If you’re stateside this summer, The Wick recommends making a pitstop at Richard Mosse’s Broken Spectre at Art Vault, Santa Fe, a presentation of recent large-scale photographs by the acclaimed Irish-born, New York-based artist alongside a never-seen-before presentation of Thoma Foundation’s recent acquisition from Mosse, Broken Spectre: a captivating, 66-minute film documenting the intensive deforestation of the world’s largest rainforest in the Brazilian Amazon.

Broken Spectre is a highly moving, poignant reflection that moves from the microscopic to the monumental, showing the impact of the ecological crisis unfolding in the Amazon basin with a searing gaze. In five decades, 20% of the Amazon rainforest has been destroyed by humans, leading to the destruction of species, extreme weather patterns and contributing to global warming.

The film demonstrates Mosse’s unique way of working, merging the fields of science, photojournalism, documentary, activism and cinema verité, and drawing on different techniques such as infrared film, ultraviolet microscopy and resource mapping. It’s an epic, heady piece that will leave you reeling.
