Georgia O’Keeffe, Music, Pink and Blue No. 2, 1918

Georgia O’Keeffe believed that art, like music, could express emotional states and sensations independent of representational subject matter. ‘I found that I could say things with colour and shapes,’ she once wrote, ‘that I couldn’t say in other way — things I had no words for.’ In her early abstract works, O’Keeffe experimented with close crops, smooth surfaces, swelling forms and gradual colour transitions to evoke the experience of sound and the rhythms she perceived in nature. Characterised by its undulating forms and vibrant palette of colours, Music, Pink and Blue No. 2 (1918) is one such brilliant example.

Enjoy a taste of Mexico at La Veranda, Rosewood London’s immersive summer long-pop in collaboration with Patrón tequila. Taking over the hotel’s Edwardian courtyard, La Veranda offers an all-day menu, refreshing tequila-based cocktails and Latin-inspired live music that will transport you in mind and spirt to the blissful coastal town of Tulum.

The luscious greenery and trickling water features make for a lovely, calming spot to while away long summer days, while the elegant archways, rattan furniture and colourful Aztec Rugs embody the vibrancy of Mexican architecture and design.

When it comes to food, opt for the yellow tail tuna with red onion, mango and chili tacos or the pork quesadillas with jalapenos, red onion and salsa verde. If you’re dining en masse, look to the dedicated taco menu which is perfect for sharing. For dessert, we’d recommend the Mexican caramel flan with a caramel crisp. Pair with a Patrón Paloma or Spicy Margarita if you’re feeling brave. Once here, we promise you’ll never want to leave.

Miss Bugs: Do No Harm — The Dispensary

For a dose of arresting art, scoot over to Jealous East in Shoreditch where you’ll find a major new installation by mixed media artist collaboration Miss Bugs. Mashing up the worlds of contemporary art, big pharma and fast food, Do No Harm — The Dispensary addresses themes of addiction, advertising and consumerism, while interrogating the role that art has played in this cycle over the years.

The installation features more than 6000 supersized capsules and tablets, which are displayed around — and spewing out from — a sentient vending machine named Damien. Among them are 800 unique poured resin capsules, each containing a discarded junk food wrapper from the likes of McDonalds, Hubba Bubba and Monster Munch.

Also included are 200 ‘Fast Chalk’ pills. Shaped in the form of Viagra and Oxycontin tablets, they are emblazoned with familiar fast food slogans like ‘Finger Lickin’ Good’ and ‘America Runs on Dunkin’.

‘Imagine a world where Willy Wonka doesn’t want to give you a golden ticket; he just wants to get you hooked,’ said Miss Bugs. ‘Judging by American TV, that’s the world we’re already living in; slice of pizza in one hand, remote control in the other, eyeballs glued to a non-stop carousel of Coca-Cola, followed by Statins, then back to Burger King, then returning to Valium. Back and forth – junk to meds – on every channel. Consumer capitalism has won!’
This is a visually provocative show that’s worthy of a weekend jaunt to Shoreditch.
