The Wick Culture - Martha Freud

Objects Martha Freud Teapot

In November last year, Martha Freud opened her first solo exhibition in almost a decade at Nonemore Gallery in Fitzrovia. Titled Mixed Messages, it included a range of hand-made ceramic pieces — tableware in particular — decorated with words that reference a song lyric, a catchphrase, an expression, or even just a thought.

Central to the exhibition was a collection of eight bisque-fired teapots, each emblazoned with reworked lyrics from the children’s song I’m A Little Teapot. One teapot reads
‘My Body My Labels’, while another says ‘Hear Me Roar’. ‘It was first written to help children remember dance moves,’ Freud has said of the song, ‘so I thought I could reimagine the lyrics to prompt a new way of thinking about ourselves and our bodies.’ Freud has a limited-edition product collection dropping soon — so, here’s hoping these mighty teapots will be available to enjoy at home.
