La Salle de Dessin took place in the historical Life Drawing Room of the Royal Academy of Arts in London and “drew inspiration from the casts, sculptures and spirits of the life models which resonate in the space.” The 12-minute long piece is comprised of three chapters, where Kim “gestured and danced to the music of Jacques Brel and Edith Piaf. The aim of this piece was to create an immersive experience for the audience, merging the past and present time.”
This is painting as we rarely get to see it, enlivened and invigorating. “I think that both Matthew’s Boat” and “La Salle de Dessin” feel like my biggest achievements so far. Working under certain parameters, focusing on time and space, fills me with excitement” Guérard says. As the art critic Jennifer Higgie puts it in an essay on the artist, her studio is “like a laboratory”. “My influences come from a lot of different places”, Guérard reflects. “I take note of my daily encounters, whether it is people, conversations, thoughts, architectures, light…. All of these are then filed, as drawings or ideas, for the initial steps into a painting.”
Guérard’s champion for The Wick is Romain Guinier, CEO of Colart. He said: “I am honoured to spotlight Charlotte Winifred Guérard, a remarkable young artist whose work invites us into a world rich with emotion. As one of six winners of our 2025 Winsor & Newton International Art Prize with Paul Smith’s Foundation she forms part of our latest cohort of artists. Through her eyes, we experience a delicate balance of identity, femininity, and the interplay of tradition and innovation. Charlotte invites us into her vibrant world through her evocative mixed media pieces that blend the realms of painting and textile art. Her unique immersive approach to creativity challenges our understanding of form and material, in space and in motion. Each piece tells a story that resonates deeply, revealing vulnerable beauty. By supporting Charlotte, we celebrate the powerful impact of creativity and the connections it fosters among us all.”
At present, Guérard is coming to the end of a five-month residency at Good Eye Projects, and from January 24th she will unveil what she has been working on in exhibition format. In Spring, a series of new paintings will also be presented at Palmer Gallery – located in a former factory on Lisson Grove – before the artist embarks on another residency at Xenia Artist Retreat, North Hampshire. We can’t wait to see what she does next.
