This week The Wick is looking at jewellery by artists, beginning with Michael Craig-Martin’s brilliant Light Bulb Earrings. The Irish-born artist is best known for his bold outline drawings of everyday objects, and this 2008 edition takes one of his familiar subjects straight off the page and onto the body. Made from 18k yellow and white gold, each earring follows the outline of an old-fashioned light bulb, with no conventional fastening. Instead, the shape itself passes directly through the ear like an oversized hoop, creating the appearance of one continuous line. Created with Louisa Guinness in an edition of 25 plus five artist’s proofs, each pair is numbered and hallmarked. Wear them by day, or let them do the talking at the next art-world party.
